About Octordle Game

Octordle Game is a free, independent version of the eight-board word puzzle. It runs in your browser, needs no account, and aims to be the calmest place to play.

Why this site exists

Many Octordle sites cover the puzzle with ads, popups and long waits. We wanted a version that loads fast, works well on a phone and gets out of your way.

You can play the daily puzzle, practice in unlimited mode, or read the how to play guide if the rules are new to you.

How the daily puzzle works

The daily puzzle picks eight words from a fixed pool using the date as a seed. Everyone who plays on the same UTC day gets the same eight words, and a new puzzle starts at midnight UTC.

Unlimited mode picks eight random words each time you press New game, and it never touches your daily streak.

Where the words come from

The answer pool holds 894 common five-letter words that we chose by hand. Every game answer comes from that pool, so you should rarely meet a word you have never seen.

The game accepts 6,574 words as guesses in total. The extra words come from the open-source Hunspell English dictionary, which uses the permissive SCOWL word lists. We block a short list of offensive words from ever becoming an answer.

Built by hand, kept light

The site is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with no framework and no third-party scripts. Pages are small, so they load quickly even on a weak connection.

The game rules have automated tests, and every page goes through a build check for titles, links, structured data and accessibility basics before we publish.

Made for everyone to play

You can play with a physical keyboard or the on-screen one. A colorblind palette (blue and orange), a dark theme and reduced-motion support are all built in.
