What Is Octordle? The Eight-Board Word Puzzle Explained

Octordle is Wordle multiplied by eight. You type one five-letter word at a time, and it lands on eight boards at once, each hiding a different secret word. You get 13 guesses in total, not 13 per board. So what is Octordle really like to play, and how does it compare with Wordle, Dordle and Quordle? Here is the short version, with the numbers.

Octordle in one minute

You start with eight empty boards and a keyboard. Type a five-letter word, press Enter, and every board scores it on its own.

Teal tiles mark a correct letter in the correct spot. Yellow tiles mark a letter that belongs somewhere else in the word, and gray tiles mark a letter the word does not use.

Octordle compared with the Wordle family

Look at the last column. Every game in the family gives you exactly five guesses more than it has boards, so the 13 in Octordle is 8 plus 5, not a random number.

Each board needs its own exact guess before it counts as solved. That leaves five spare guesses for scouting in every one of these games.

What changes is the load on your head. With more boards you juggle more words, but each guess also teaches you more. Players disagree about whether Quordle or Octordle feels harder, because both games run on the same five spare guesses.

The last column shows the trade. Guesses per board fall from 6.00 in Wordle to about 1.63 in Octordle, yet each guess is scored on every board at once.

Why eight boards are not eight times harder

Imagine playing eight separate Wordles. You would get 48 guesses, six for each word, and every guess would teach you about one word only.

Octordle gives you 13 guesses, but each one is scored eight times. A guess that tells you little on one board may unlock another, so the information you collect per guess is far higher.

That is why the game feels hard and fair at the same time. You lose guesses, but you gain information, and careful planning turns that trade into a win.

A quick walk-through

Imagine your first word colors two tiles on board 1 and none on board 2. Board 1 now has clues, and board 2 has ruled out five letters.

Your second word should use fresh letters, so it works hard on both boards. By the third guess, some boards start to take shape, and you begin to choose which one to finish first.

Who Octordle suits

If you solve Wordle in three or four guesses and want a longer puzzle, Octordle is a natural next step. It rewards planning, so it also suits players who like to think in steps and choose which problem to tackle first.

How the daily puzzle stays fair

Everyone who plays on the same UTC day gets the same eight words, so results are easy to compare. Your streak grows when you win on consecutive days, and a missed day starts it over.

The share button copies a spoiler-free summary. It shows how many guesses each board took and never reveals a letter, so you can post it anywhere.

The daily Octordle gives everyone the same eight words. A new puzzle starts at midnight UTC, and your streak grows when you win on consecutive days.

Unlimited Octordle deals a fresh set of eight words every game and never touches your daily streak. New players should start there.

Sequence, Rescue and the archive

Octordle comes in a few flavors. In Sequence, you see one board at a time and get 15 guesses. In Rescue, the game plays four starter words for you, and you have nine guesses left.

Is Octordle hard?

It is harder than Wordle, mainly because you track eight words instead of one. Most of the difficulty is bookkeeping, not vocabulary.

Good habits shrink that load fast: open with words that share no letters, close nearly finished boards early, and read the key markers before you type.

If the eight boards ever feel like too much, shrink the problem. Pick one board, list the words that still fit it, and solve it. Then pick the next board and repeat until the last one falls.

Common misunderstandings

• "You get 13 guesses per board." You get 13 guesses for the whole puzzle, and each guess goes to every open board.
• "A gray tile removes a letter everywhere." Gray speaks for one board only. The same letter can be green on another board.
• "Solved boards keep taking guesses." A solved board locks, and it shows none of your later guesses.
• "Two boards can share a word." Not in this game. Every puzzle uses eight different words.
